BVI Surf Review: The Technical Guide

Apple Bay (Capoon’s Bay)

Apple Bay is widely considered the crown jewel of BVI surfing. It is a high-performance A-frame reef break that is remarkably consistent during the winter swell season.

  • The Wave: A classic peak that offers both a punchy right and a longer, more peeling left. It handles everything from waist-high to double-overhead.
  • Technicalities: The reef is a shallow shelf of elkhorn coral and rock. At lower tides, it becomes very “technical”, you need to be precise with your kick-outs to avoid the “inside” where the reef can get hungry.
  • The Take-off: Steep and fast. On a solid North swell, the right-hander bowls up quickly; the left is often softer but offers a longer wall for carving.
  • Best Conditions: It thrives on a North/Northwest groundswell with East/Southeasterly trade winds.
  • Pro Tip: If Apple Bay is maxing out, 8ft+, it often begins to “close out.” This is when seasoned surfers head to Cane Garden Bay.

Other Key Breaks

  • Cane Garden Bay: A world-class right-hand point break. It rarely breaks, requiring a massive North swell to “wrap” into the bay, but when it’s on, it offers a 300-yard ride that is legendary.
  • Josiah’s Bay: A more forgiving beach break with a sandy bottom. Perfect for days when the reef breaks are too intimidating or for guests who prefer a “softer” landing. They offer board hire and surf lessons.
  • Brewers Bay: A heavy, hollow reef break for advanced surfers only. It’s “shifty” and powerful.

Board Rentals & Local Knowledge

The BVI has a “bring your own” culture for pros, but for those travelling light, there are high-quality options:

Top Recommendation: BVI Water Toys / Island Surf & Sail

Located in Soper’s Hole, West End, they are the local authority.

  • The Boards: They stock boards shaped by West Indies Surfboards, specifically glassed for BVI conditions. They carry everything from 5’8″ performance shortboards to 10’0″ longboards.
  • Pricing: Expect to pay approximately $25–$30 per day or $160–$185 per week.
  • Convenience: They offer free delivery for weekly rentals, perfect for having boards waiting at Faymos Properties when guests arrive.
  • Gear Included: Rentals typically include a leash, wax, board bag, and soft roof racks for their rental car.

Sebastian’s on the Beach

Located right at Apple Bay, they often have a smaller “on-the-spot” rental selection. This is great for guests who decide to paddle out on a whim without pre-arranging a delivery.

Insider “Surf Etiquette” for Guests

The BVI surf community is welcoming but small.

  • Respect the Lineup: Apple Bay is a small take-off zone and locals follow traditional etiquette.
  • The “Bomba” Factor: While the physical Bomba Shack was lost to Irma, the “vibe” remains. The beach is narrow; during high surf, the “Magic Sand” at Apple Bay can vanish entirely, leaving only cobbles.
  • Tides: Unlike the Pacific, BVI tides are minimal, usually less than 1.5 ft, but a high tide generally helps “fill in” the reef at Apple Bay for a smoother ride.
  • Lifeguards: Please note that aside from Cane Garden Bay, most of the BVI beaches are not patrolled by regular lifeguards.
